Friends of MAYDE: Montana Purchase

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Photographer and Creative, Montana Purchase on our latest Winter campaign. Captured entirely on film, Montana’s effortless and nostalgic style was the perfect fit for encapsulating what Winter looks like for us here at MAYDE. We caught up with Montana to find out how she made her start in photography, why she prefers film over digital, and the Winter rituals she abides by.

Hey Montana! Thanks so much for taking part in our Journal where we learn more about the people we work with and admire! First off – tell us how you started in photography?

Thank you for having me! I have always admired photography, and was first introduced by my older sister when we were kids. We would play dress ups, imitating editorials we would see in magazines, and usually I was in front of the lens. I got a little camera shy as I got older and naturally gravitated to behind the lens. It only became a love story when I discovered film as a teenager, and has flourished from there.

What’s your favourite thing to shoot, and why do you prefer using film over digital?

I love shooting faces, people, bodies. Humans are so beautiful. Flowers also usually make a feature. I believe shooting on film pushes you to become a better photographer, you don’t have many chances to get the shot right and you have to believe in what you see when you see it. And then no matter what you see, the film always has its own touch, bringing something sensitive and beautiful - something I have not yet found through digitals.

Is there a dream photography job you’d kill for?

I would love to shoot editorials for magazines, they are so fun and interesting. You aren’t as bound by a brief - you can get as creative and weird as you want.

Now that we’re heading into the cooler months, do you have any winter rituals you abide by?

Multiple cups of hot herbal tea a day is common through the colder months. Also, time to get the wetsuits out for the most beautiful surfing of the year on the east coast.

Snowy retreat in the mountains? Or island paradise in the sun? Which one would you choose?

After a very wet Australian summer, I think I am ready for some time in the sun.

You recently shot our Winter campaign at the amazing Ocean Club on the Gold Coast. What would be your go-to Mayde towels or throws for this winter?

It is hard to go past the Crescent Towel in classic black and white. So soft and cosy to be wrapped up in for winter. Or the Daintree Towel in White felt so fresh!

And finally, dream winter escape?

Hiking cradle mountain in Tasmania, or tramping in the beautiful Milford Sounds. One day I would love to surf in Japan while it is snowing. Switzerland in the snow also looks so beautiful. Obviously I do a lot of dreaming.
